From the Osmonds and Monkees in the 1960’s all the way to the Jonas Brothers and Westlife more recently, Boy Bands have played an important role in English-language pop music, setting style and dance trends and breaking the hearts of teenage girls across the planet.

Boy Band songs are typically romantic and fairly easy to understand even for non-native English speakers, making them a great way to practice your English listening and comprehension skills. This musical phenomenon seemed to be on a downward trend at the end of the past decade, but now new bands from Britain and the U.S. have taken over the pop charts once more. This weekend on English Attack! we feature two such bands, One Direction and JLS. You may even find yourself singing along with them!

This week, see what you would need to create your own Boy Band by playing this week’s SayWhat? – our video karaoke language challenge – based on the Howcast video on this topic.

With the United States presidential election less than seven weeks away, President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney are accelerating their paid television advertising campaigns in an attempt to influence the minority of undecided voters – most likely less than 5% of the electorate – who may decide the outcome of the election.

This weekend on English Attack!, we feature interactive video lessons based on two contrasting ads, one from each camp, which do battle on the central issue of the American economy and which candidate seems most likely to get it growing again. It is an issue, and an outcome, which will have wider repercussions for the struggling world economy.
